Meeting 3
HEAPS Events
Emphasis the importance of HEAPS events, check whether students have attended at least one, if not them please discuss the Cambridge residential with them. If students attend no trips at all through HEAPS then they are missing the valuable point of comparison that we offer between institutions. The events are as important as the mentoring so if a student shows no sign of attending then please speak to Helen. Also if you think that they might be disengaging and you are having issues getting commitment from you also contact Helen.
6-9th – Cambridge Residential
June –UCL Library tour and 6 week reference access
July – Various evening career events and Medical History Event
October – Interview practice day
University Vocabulary
Ask students to bring a couple of prospectuses(or use a website) compare and contrast what the universities have to offer. Discuss possible drawbacks from using prospectuses (and university websites) as the only source of comparing institutions.
Look at any vocabulary students have come across and ensure they understand what this means:
UCAS, Undergraduate, Graduate, post graduate, Bachelors, Masters, PhD, Sandwich course
Campus, Halls (of residence), (self-) catered, Russell Group, Erasmus, NUS, SU, lecture, seminar, tutorial, fresher,
Reading
Ensure that students are acting upon any reading discussed at previous meetings. If not, perhaps suggest they bring something with them for you to look at together (apparently the thought of reading the Economist has been frightening some students)
For the Next Meeting:
Meeting 4 should be taking place after Cambridge Residential, please prepare students as they will have to start justifying their course choices and back up their choices with evidence of reading at this meeting. They will also need to have an outline of their personal statement which they looked at tin the last meeting and will have spent time on at Cambridge.
