Meeting 3
(w/b 16th June)
Aims: Begin to justify choices and build up personal statement
- Discuss possible course choices and universities – Why do they think this course/university is appropriate to them? What differences have they noticed between establishments from visits?
- What interests them about the courses they are looking at?
- Build up activities for personal statement
- Have they been to any HEAPS arranged lectures/seminars? Discuss the difference between classroom teaching and lectures, seminars and tutorials. Attendance at these events can be used in the personal statement.
Please encourage attendance at the Cambridge residential. There will be a Q&A session for parents and students in July some time. Again this can be used on the PS.
- Consider work experience for the summer and discuss the benefits that it could provide in aiding their application.
Have students read around their subject – both books and articles? If possible gain internet access and research some possible titles. The UCL library visit in July will be a chance for students to access academic texts. Ensure students are printing off the 'Articles of the Month' thereby engaging with current affairs
- Are students registered on the UCAS website?
If you have time create a dummy account on UCAS to see the process for yourself, bear in mind that students need to pay £15 to apply, this is either by credit or debit card, however some schools allow students to pay them.
For next meeting:
- Students need to have drafted an outline of the personal statements.
Pure Potential website has examples of good personal statements and HEAPS will email you a worksheet to help you if needed.
- Find a venue or activity for last session before the summer, this could be related to developing a personal, academic or career interest
